The Airliner: Reviews & Ratings
Handled a very large group well. Server was excellent and personally deserving of all 5 stars. Drinks were VERY well made and delivered quickly. The pizza is Iowa pizza, so take it or leave it - it’s a preference thing. The Italian beef was spot on, with a fantastic giardineria and ultra crispy fries. The building was adequate, with plenty of space to accommodate a 25+ person group. The restrooms were atrocious, hence the low atmosphere rating. It’s a bar in a college town, so I get that - but was not what I wanted to walk into when washing my hands after dinner.
We really liked the gluten-free Pizza crust. The Vegetarian and Supreme Pizza were really good. A classic Bar/Restaurant in Iowa City (since 1944)
Pizza was good, but I'd struggle to call what I got a "Chicago style deep dish" I'd recommend whomever is making the menu to research that style of pizza and either make that or take the option off the menu. It was a good pizza however, so I am not complaining, just not as described. Half Price deal on Tuesday was good, drinks were average price, server seemed uninterested
It's had a few updates over the years, but it's still the "Liner" that I remember from college. It's one of a handful of places in Iowa City that have been around over multiple generations and still going strong.
Pizza was 50% off when I stopped in which was an incredible special. Luis provided amazing service the entire time I was there. Definitely will be back again!
Came here with coworkers on Tuesday for our first time and will definitely be back. The food was great, exceptional variety of drinks, and our server, Angelina, was super nice and funny.

Welcome to The Airliner, a beloved establishment nestled in the heart of Iowa City at 22 S Clinton St. This classic bar and restaurant, serving locals since 1944, is a charming blend of tradition and modernity, making it a staple in the community.
One of the highlights of dining at The Airliner is certainly their pizza. While local preferences denote it as "Iowa pizza," reviews from patrons reveal a mixed bag of praises and suggestions. From the gluten-free crust lauded by Bijan Kholghi to the indulging Italian beef praised by Jon Ross, you’re sure to find something that piques your interest. A unique note in Jon’s review is the “fantastic giardineria” and ultra crispy fries that accompany the beef, showcasing the kitchen's understanding of flavorful pairings.
However, it is essential to enter with an open mind regarding the pizza's characteristics. Some diners express their confusion over the "Chicago-style deep dish," as Hunter Heppe mentions, suggesting that there might be some expectation reshaping needed. Regardless, the flavors seem to shine through, and the Tuesday night half-price pizza special adds an enticing incentive for those looking to savor these delectable offerings.
Another standout at The Airliner is the attentive service—something that received high praise across the board. Austin Sondag’s experience underscores the positive interactions with staff, specifically highlighting the exceptional service mirrored by several other reviewers. Quick drink deliveries and attentive servers, like the notable Luis, enhance the overall dining experience, making it feel personal and welcoming.
While some aspects of the environment could use a bit of maintenance—specifically, the restrooms noted by Jon Ross—the spacious setting is well-suited for large gatherings. The Airliner manages to cater to groups of over twenty, maintaining an atmosphere that fosters a strong sense of community among friends and fellow diners. Kevin Kamp fondly recalls its persistent presence through generations, further solidifying its status as a cherished establishment in the college town.
As you plan your next outing, remember that The Airliner is more than just a restaurant; it's an Iowa City institution. Whether you’re stopping by for a quick drink or a slice of pizza under a nostalgic atmosphere, you’re sure to find moments worth savoring at this traditional bar that continues to evolve while paying homage to its storied past.
